Happy Valentine’s Day from NIETOC!

2018 NIETOC Duo Finalists
The world of competitive speech is one driven by stories…stories that touch our hearts, challenge our minds, and tickle our funny bones. The goal of the NIETOC Board is to provide our tournament attendees with an “Experience” that reminds us why we do this activity and why words matter. We strive to bring both heart and humor into a weekend celebration of those who give so much of their lives teaching and sharing the power of the spoken word.
It is hard to believe that we will be hosting our tenth annual tournament in a few months. We are grateful for all of you who have joined the NIETOC family and helped us learn and grow over the past decade. We appreciate the wonderful conversations with fellow educators, the incredible performances by your students, and the memorable laughs with colleagues from around the country.
Please take a moment to read the words of wisdom shared by Conor Sherry, one of last year’s national champions about why, now more than ever, humor matters. After all, as the great American writer and humorist Mark Twain once quipped: “The human race has only one really effective weapon and that is laughter.”
We hope that you and your team will have the opportunity to join us for our 2019 competition in Omaha, Nebraska, where we will do our best to create three days of education and competition that will make you feel, think and laugh.

The Power of One Voice

The moment I walked onto the final stage at NIETOC and took a deep breath, I realized that my voice really does matter, and I have a duty to be a voice for the voiceless. NIETOC was also a turning point in my passion for HI. As an HI competitor, you can sometimes feel like you are just making people laugh. It’s easy to feel overshadowed by the more political or dramatic events. But before the HI final round, Mr. Robert Shepard spoke to the finalists and made me realize the importance and power of humor. I realized that, with the current state of the world, making people smile could change their day or their lives. After NIETOC, I took more pride in spreading a message through humor. I learned that if you truly care deep down in your heart about what you are saying, it doesn’t matter what event, what emotion, or what place you get; you are going to have an effect on people. It’s because of tournaments like NIETOC that we get the opportunity to fulfill our human duty.”
